I was very sad to hear that the bookstore chain Borders has filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy. I love books and I love the experience of browsing through books in a bookstore. Add coffee and a live musician and I'm in sensory heaven.
When I was growing up, I used to also love browsing for vinyl albums in record stores. But vinyl albums gave way to 8-track tapes, then cassettes, then CDs. Eventually the Internet dramatically terraformed the landscape of the music industry and how we consume the tunes we love. Now, if I want a song or an album, I go directly to the artist's web site or iTunes and download it within seconds.
A similar revolution is taking place in the world of book publishing. For years we've been able to order virtually any book online and have it delivered to our door as fast as the next day. More recently, we've been able to download books to our PCs, Macs, Kindles, iPads or phones instantly.
As much as I lament the closing of bookstores, I am inspired by the seemingly-infinite online bookstore on my computer, on my phone and on my Kindle.
Enter The Domino Project. Bestselling author Seth Godin is taking publishing to the next level. Not just the instantaneous delivery of books and big ideas, but finding innovative ways to deliver the big ideas of specific books to the specific readers who will resonate with them the most.
Full disclosure time: I'm a huge Seth Godin reader/fan/supporter and a member of The Domino Project's Street Team, a cadre of evangelists for these big ideas that can change lives and hopefully transform the world. Yeah, we have high aspirations and I wouldn't have it any other way.
The Domino Project's latest brainchild? Driving down the price of the Kindle version of the book as low as it can go. If you go to the website TheDominoProject.com and sign up for the free, no obligation newsletter, you can help lower the Kindle price of Seth Godin's forthcoming Poke The Box .
For every 5,000 subscribers to the newsletter, the price of the Kindle version of Poke The Box will be lowered by one dollar. It started at $9.99 and is currently down to $7.99. They'll take the price of the book all the way down to one dollar if enough people sign up. The deadline for this experiment is end of the day Friday February 18th.
This is what poking the box is all about.
Initiating.
Trying something new.
Letting the people drive the price down.
Making big ideas more available.
In the words of John Lennon, "Power to the people, right on!"
Leo Buscaglia was known as "Doctor Love." He taught a course in "Love" at USC back in the Eighties. When I was there, I tried to get into his Love class, but there was a two year waiting list and I never got in.
However, like so many people around the world, I was able to read his amazing books, including "Love."
His PBS specials were must-see-TV thirty years ago.
If you've never seen Leo, or if you haven't seen his talks about Love in years, here is a Valentine's Day sample of the late, great Leo Buscaglia...
Listen closely. It's playing. It's a melody that resonates
with that still, small voice that whispers to you.
You've heard the music before. You've heard it because the
music is actually inside of you. Because the music actually
is you - it's your true essence.
You could hear the music easier when you were a child - before
the cacophony of deafening distractions from mass media and mass culture began
to drown out the tune.
The music inside you has never stopped playing. You just
might have become distracted from hearing it.
There are people out there encouraging you to not only hear
the music, but to take action when you hear it.
Seth Godin is a guy who hears the music loud and clear. I've
been reading his books for about a decade and I make it a point to check out his
blog daily. While on the surface his books may seem to be about business,
marketing and technology, they're truly about so much more. His books are also
about the music inside of you.
You came to this world with unique talents. You came to this
world with a song in your heart that should be shared with the rest of us. If
you don't share it, we all miss out on your gifts.
Seth Godin's books , blog and talks encourage you to hear the music and
share your gifts, even if he has to encourage you with a swift kick in the
pants. His ideas have inspired me to go public with my core beliefs via my blog
Kairos Cafe, as well as on Facebook , Twitter and other platforms.
So when I heard that Seth Godin was not only launching a new venture called
The Domino Project , but looking for people to spread the word, I jumped at the
opportunity. I've been selected for The Domino Project's Street Team to join
other evangelists for a revolution in publishing and connecting people with big
ideas which will ultimately help more people hear the music and share their
gifts.
As I tweeted earlier in the week, "I hear the music & figure it's high
time I joined in the Dance." (Thanks to the late Dan Fogelberg's "Run for The
Roses" for inspiring the tweet)
The first Domino Project release will be Seth Godin's latest book, Poke The Box, a manifesto on transcending conformity and embracing ingenuity and
innovation. This book will push you to hear the music inside you and take
initiative, action and grow. Poke The Box will shake things up in your
life and in the world, just as The Domino Project will continue to do so with
more titles and bigger ideas.
Poke The Box artwork
Poke The Box will be released in hardcover, audiobook, Kindle and
limited collectable edition on March 1st. You can preorder it now at
Amazon.com. I have. As soon as I get my hands on it, I'll tell you a lot more
about it.
In the meantime, close your eyes, focus on your breathing, listen to the
music inside of you and then share it with the rest of us. It's what you came
here to do.
With Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger at Super Bowl Media Day
The madness has begun.
The Dallas area is freezing this week (six degrees as I write this), but the hype for the Super Bowl is at a fever pitch as journalists, athletes, celebrities and fans have journeyed here for the big game.
Pittsburgh quarterback Ben Roethlisberger stepped onto the field on Media Day and turned his camera on the media while I followed him with mine.
It's great to see athletes and coaches who have reached the pinnacle of their profession. Their moment of opportunity has arrived. This is what every ounce of blood, sweat and tears has been shed for.
May they enjoy and seize the moment.
May we learn life lessons from the game and become inspired to reach whatever our own personal Super Bowl might be.
"Soccer For A Cause " is the vision of San Antonio philanthropist Gordon Hartman. Inspired by his daughter Morgan, who is 17 and has special needs, Gordon and his wife Maggie led the way to build Morgan's Wonderland , the world's first ultra-accessible family fun park, which serves children and adults with disabilities. Gordon's latest vision is to bring professional soccer to San Antonio as he has secured a franchise in the North American Soccer League. In an unprecedented model, 100% of the profits from the team will go to help fund Morgan's Wonderland so that children and adults with special needs will continue to be served there.
This wonderful idea is currently facing some opposition in San Antonio. Spurs Sports and Entertainment (SS&E), the parent company of the San Antonio Spurs NBA basketball team, has designs on bringing its own professional soccer team to San Antonio. SS&E is reportedly lobbying San Antonio and Bexar County officials to dissuade them from approving any city or county money for the stadium Gordon Hartman is planning on building near Morgan's Wonderland . The reason appears to be that SS&E, which also owns the San Antonio Silver Stars WNBA basketball team, the San Antonio Rampage hockey team and the Austin Toros NBA developmental league basketball team in addition to the Spurs, would rather be the ones to profit from any advertising or other revenue that a soccer team in the area will generate.
Having been to Morgan's Wonderland and seen firsthand the wonderful service the park provides and the joy it brings to the lives of those who need it the most, I fully support Soccer For a Cause . Meeting children and adults with special needs (including soldiers recovering from wounds suffered in Iraq and Afghanistan), and knowing that this innovative professional soccer model will serve them for years to come, I am happy to join a cause that will speak volumes about the love, heart and soul of our community.
Go to the web site SoccerForACause.com and follow the easy instructions on how you can tell San Antonio and Bexar County officials that you support this heavenly cause as well.
